chamber (on the soft surface)
A faint grey light coming from a narrow line in the wall wakes you up from an uneasy sleep. You realise that the air is cold, humid, and still. Your eyes get used to the darkness but still you are not able to perceive shapes.

This is a strange place, you don't remember being here before, or ever, but still you have a sensation of certain familiarity in it.
Maybe it is the smell of the room that resembles to something else.

Focusing your attention onto your body, your perception is telling you that you are lying on a soft surface.
Your skin is covered in sweat in spite of the cold you are feeling.

A sensorial text-based experience located within the boundaries of a fence.

You wake up in a strange room, the light is gone, you need to find your way out of the room, seems like you need to get out of the bed in the first place.
It might not be so simple.

Welcome to No Sign Should Remain Inert

You are entering a new world where you play the main character in a story. Interactive Fiction allows you to type natural language commands that are translated to the story.
If you want to know more about the creators of the game, type ABOUT.


The Map

In order to move around the setting of an Interactive Fiction, the most common method is to use compass directions. With the exception of the first scene "the chamber", where the moving directions are left, right, and forward.
For the remaining rooms and spaces of the game: north, south, east, west, as well as northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest. You can abbreviate these with n, s, e, w, ne, nw, se, sw.
Other directional commands include in, out, up or u, and down or d.


Puzzles

During the game you will encounter some puzzles and mysteries within the story. You may need to open something, find something, discover something, wear something, use something, go somewhere, and more.
Sometimes the best solution if you are stuck is to type look (l); examine (x); or inventory (i), and re-read where you are or what you are carrying and wearing in order to find a clue to advance.


Commands

The commands are used by typing a verb, and sometimes a verb followed by a noun.
The most useful and widely used commands include:
Examine, abbreviated as x

Inventory, abbreviated as i

Touch

Some examples: go north, look, examine table, open door, etc.
You can get creative and try with other actions.
Some commands require the combination of an action with a single object, as in examine mattress. Other commands can have a more complex syntax, such as light candle stub with candle, or look under (the) table.
Try experimenting the richness of language and the varieties of combinations available.

You are not sure if this is what you were wearing last night.

Apart from an eerie sensation, you don't feel any pain, all your parts are there, and your body feels normal in spite of being cold.
Your legs feel a bit numb.

In your jeans left front pocket there is a tiny key that you return to its place. In the right front pocket there is a ball of lint and paper scraps that seem to have been washed in the machine. You find nothing in your back pockets.

You try to grab it but it is no longer there, you smell your hand but it doesn't smell, it seems like it didn't exist at all.

You reach one side of the mattress, you can touch the floor, it is a wooden floor, it feels like some boards are slightly bent, or out of their places, it might be a very old floor, with some empty space underneath to avoid humidity and to host insects and other living beings. Groping around and you find a small piece of what it feels like a candle.

Then, you reach the other side of the mattress finding a damp wall. You find nothing in the wall, it is just cold and granulated, like a basic plaster mixed with sand.

You start feeling anxious.

A blunt and small candle stub, it seems like some light might come in handy.

Your expectations are growing but also your anxiety. You still don't know where you are. And you hesitate at where you will be. What are you doing next?

Some thoughts came to your mind: the snow and the cold make everything look monochromatic, as a black and white picture or a cyanotype. You feel lost, and lonely.

You try to walk across the room in the dark, paying as much attention possible to your feet. You can't find the mattress, only the wooden floor all around you, wherever you step. You can't feel any wall.

The door opens with some effort, it is bloated and damp, you wonder when was the last time it was open.

Your eyes take a while in getting used to the dim light, it was so dark before that you almost forgot how to use your eyes.
The door where you came from is here, closed, you didn't close it and you didn't even notice when or how it happened you don't want to go back there.
In the wall next to the door, you notice some framed photographs.

To the South you can see some light coming from a skylight and a corridor.

Your clothes smell like freshly washed, they fit comfortable, now that you can appreciate them, you realise that these are not your clothes, nor your style, even though they fit you perfectly. The whole outfit looks from another era, the blue jeans are high waisted light blue, worn but clean; the linen shirt is dark mauve; and the woollen cardigan is undefined cream coloured, with thin light blue threads mixed within the woven.

A wooden door that looks very old, now you can see that it is not so bloated as you felt before.

You can't focus on the pictures, even if you try very hard, it is more likely that the photoggraphs are blurred (but why?).
You can't get closer to the frames because a dusty table lies amongst you and the wall; you don't want to disturb the fine powder layer, not even by breathing close to it.
It might be better to forget about the pictures.

It's too risky to modify the dust, they are definitely out of reach.

The table has a crochet table runner and a thick layer of dust. Looking at the dust closely you notice some marks that resemble objects that were once on the table, long and narrow marks, maybe more framed photographs, probably a vase would fit in the rounded dust-stencilled trace.
You don't dare touching anything, afraid that you would leave a new imprint.

Stenciled shapes of what you deduce could have been frames, vases, or souvenirs. At the moment they are only reminiscences of an absent presence, it haunts you.

The floor is extremely cold and a bit wet, your feet leave subtee traces like soft gradients of condensation. The tiles look worn out.

To the East is the last lit bit of the corridor under the skylight, but further away you can only see darkness.

A sturdy door with some scratches at the bottom, seems like it used to be opened with the help of one's foot.

The door makes a weird noise but it does not open. You don't have enough energy to try harder.

You stare very carefully holding your breath to avoid blowing the dust marks that sit on the wall. The traces resemble frames that you guess that might have been decorating the corridor. You wonder why the frames are not there anymore, but the nails still are. You can't avoid the comparison with the opposite wall where you have seen frames and pictures.

Carefully you step on the dark part of the corridor, you trip into some kind of structure that blocks your way into the darkness, you can barely distinguish some wooden ends, like chair or table legs, as if it was a pile of collapsed furniture. It is not that you are thrilled to know what is in the other side of the furniture pile, but you are still intrigued by it, maybe leave the exploration for another time.

To the West you go back to under the skylight.
To the North you can see an open door that leads to the living room.

Trying not to hurt yourself with splinters and not to collapse the strange structure, you examine the wooden pieces coming from the darkness.
They do feel like chairs and tables, in random order and not very neatly organised. You can't reach another interpretation of this mess at the moment.

The door swings back closed, the air moves your hair softly, caressing your face, you feel warmth.

living room
It is warmer here. It smells strange.
The room resembles to a living room, but it has no furniture, only traces carved or unpolished in the wooden floor.
There is one window facing North, a lot of light comes through it, the light appears to have a physical presence in the air by the flying dust and lint moving with laziness under the crisp limits of the sun beam.

To the South is the swinging door to the corridor. 
To the East is a panel door, with eight glass lites, the funny odour intensifies in this direction, not unbearable though.

The smell is weird, but not completely unpleasant. It intensifies to the East.

The traces represent what probably had been chairs around a table, two armchairs, a coffee table, maybe also a TV table behind.
The marks in the flooring reveal the presence of people for first time, there is no dust, only remains of where someone used to relax watching their favourite show. There are also outlines of frames in the walls.

A double pane window, with green wooden open venetian blinds.
The light from outside is too intense for your eyes already used to the darkness and shadows of the house, it hurts to look outside for too long and you can't distinguish any shape besides of a yellow-greenish color, most probably belonging to the grass or plants in the garden.

Stepping on the slow motion dust in the light beam, you get closer to the window, when your hand is near the knob, you decide to stay away from the light.

As you get closer to it, your steps move the air accelerating the dance of the particles.

A whisper advises you to close the door after you, or the wind currents will enter the house. "All doors in the foyer must be always closed".

In front of the main entrance, in the only wall without doors, is a thin walnut console with a key hanger, a Carrara marble countertop and a framed mirror.
Behind the entrance door rests a pile of folded garden chairs, obstructing one of the panes of the double door, which opens to the inside.
From the ceiling hangs a light pink alabaster lamp, it is daylight, so there is no need for it to be on.
The odour gets funnier here.

To the North is a closed double door to the garden or the main entrance door to the house.
To the West is a closed wooden panel door with eight glass lites.
To the East is a closed wooden panel door with eight glass lites and a translucent (once white, now grey) organza curtain.

The smell gets stronger in here, as the doors are shut it feels stuffed.

The beveled mirror is corroded and opaque, it is hard to see your face in it with all the dark stains.

A smooth Carrara marble surface to get rid of the several things that you carried in your pockets when you were outside the house.

A thin walnut console with a key hanger, a Carrara marble countertop and a framed mirror. Its wooden parts are finely carved with leaves and geometric designs.

A pile of white folded garden chairs rests behind the door pane. They look comfortable. There is not enough room to open one now.

Filling your lungs with air, in case the smell get worse, you open the door. A whisper advises you to close the door after you, or the wind currents will enter the house, "all doors in the foyer must be always closed".

The door squeaks as it opens.
A dense hot air wall hits your face, it feels December noon, just before the summer starts in this part of the world. It is so silent and still, you pay attention, you stay immobile with all your senses aware.


You are in the dark, in the South end of the room there is a dim glow, you can't see anything else.

There are some of candles in stands around an oblong box. The candles are lit but they don't light. From the box comes a very dim yellowish glow. Near the box there are some silhouettes and small glares.

A deep, old rotten smell invades your nostrils.
Becomes present, ancient.

The absolute darkness is not allowing you to see what the shapes stand for, you don't dare getting closer without any light source near you.

You light your stub of a candle on the larger, dim candle. It flickers into life, giving you slightly more illumination.

There are four wreaths with different colours and species of flowers, some of them have purple signs with golden letters, but you don't know what they say.

You find a letter on the coffin. As you read it, your candle burns out and the flame singes your hand.

You throw down the candle in surprise and light once again enters the room.

bedroom
In the bedroom part of the room there is a window facing East, from where you can see the garden.
There is a narrow corner closet hidden behind an arcade dividing the bedroom from the office.
The room is dominated by a double bed framed by two fancy small night tables, with no lamps on them.

To the North is the office.

You clarify your throat, you feel some dryness, you take a deep breath, but then the sounds won't come out of your mouth, instead, you read the letter for yourself:

You did never write a love letter to me, I did never rite a dead letter to you, neither did we.

Emptied we are.

How can I be somewhere else at the same time that I was being in you? It was impossible.

I want you to share my coffin. I'd like you to experience my sarcophagus, I'lll cover you with my shroud so you will feel the warmth you used to feel before becoming alive again.
How many times did you came through the cycle?
How vast is your experience now?

All right, so we are stuck here, we can't come out or come in again. How will you deal with it? How do you prepare for death? Are you ready? It doesn't look like, but I guess you are.
You are inside you and nobody else is, do you like it?
Are you trying to escape? Did you ever accomplished it?
Are we sharing the experience? Are we sharing the flu?
How will I fit in my coffin?

A window to the East lets you see the sunny side of the garden.

A dark wood corner closet, its door is slightly open.

In the closet's shelves there are bathroom supplies, some cleaning objects and products. In the bottom shelf there is a cardboard box.

>take supplies
You feel clean, and you don't want to clean anything around. Your physiological needs seem to be inexistent now, so you don't need toilet paper.

 A heavy cardboard box.

You place the box in the floor near the closet.
You lift the lid of the box carefully revealing gift wrapping and packing paper enclosing some fragile objects, you are too afraid by their fragility to remove them from their place, instead, you tried lifting and moving parts of the wraps discovering a fine crystal jug and several glasses.

The room resembles to a living room, but it has no furniture, only traces carved or unpolished in the wooden floor.
There is one window facing North, a lot of light comes through it, the light appears to have a physical presence in the air by the flying dust and lint moving with laziness under the crisp limits of the sun beam.

To the South is the swinging door to the corridor. 
To the East is a panel door, with eight glass lites, the funny odour intensifies in this direction, not unbearable though.

Carefully you step on the dark part of the corridor, you trip into some kind of structure that blocks your way into the darkness, you can barely distinguish some wooden ends, like chair or table legs, as if it was a pile of collapsed furniture. It is not that you are thrilled to know what is in the other side of the furniture pile, but you are still intrigued by it, maybe leave the exploration for another time.

To the West you go back to under the skylight.
To the North you can see an open door that leads to the living room.

The room seems like a long corridor, the light coming from the skylight is not very strong, you can't see further than a couple of meters. The floor is made of alternated red and yellow tiles, it feels cold, you are barefoot when you realize the piercing contact with the cold floor.

To the South East there is another door with a small tin sign.
To the East you can vaguely imagine that the corridor goes on, but it is too dark to know that for sure.

In the wall opposite to the window there is a shelf with a teapot and some trays, and a narrow table with an orange flower pattern oilcloth.

There are two narrow beds and a small -very cute- night table. All the rubbish piles are gone, some nice old wooden chairs accumulate in a neat pile on the bed to the left.
There is a closet from floor to ceiling in the wall behind the open door.
The room has two windows, one to the South and one to the West, both have louvers, but some light comes through the slats.

The sun is so bright. You blink a couple of times more, between blinks you start noticing the contours of what look like people. They interweave in your blink, either the garden or the people. You try to focus, to concentrate.
You are standing with the door at your back. At your feet there is a door mat made of wire to clean the mud from your shoes.
The garden opens as a whole new world before your eyes.

To the North there is an open garden, delimited far away by trees, it glows with a strange radiancy. Seems like there are some people in that direction.
To the West extends a narrow path of concrete slabs, which ends next to a hut outlined from the vegetal background.

You would have to get out of the shelter first.

Several meters behind the hut you see a fence and a small path that goes in the same direction. They seem to go outside the garden, through the gate. You wonder about running away, but there is a feeling that is asking you to remain -even if it is eery that you hear it as a voice in your head- you decide to remain where you are.
Your eyes carefully traverse everything before you, the grass, the slabs of the path, a snail shimmering trail near your feet, the narcissus plants that border the path with their yellow flowers. If you look closer, you can even see the small drops of water paused in the leaves, not falling. Not just collected, not about falling. Just there. If you  approach enough you can see the surroundings outside-in or upside-down.

To the West there is a small hut, just like cubicle with a door and a window, you can't see inside it from where you are standing.
To the East you can go back inside.

The door is stuck, but it doesn't seem locked. You lean the weight of your body against the old wood panel and then it recedes and snaps open making a big scandal in the still ambient.
It made you realise that there were no sounds for a while, not even birds, or wind, nothing even far away. Your spine shivers. You feel very lonely again, and now it is combed with a strange feeling of being watched that is not making you feel accompanied.
You enter the small room, the ceiling has some small holes from where the light comes shaped into sunbeams remarked by the dust and lint that flying around because of your presence there. The stillness was disturbed by your sudden entrance, and is interrogating your presence there.

The hut is very small and smells like dust and humidity. There is not much room to walk around. Everything looks abandoned, dirt collects everywhere.
There is an empty bookcase, with an old almanac pinned in the side. Pieces of discoloured paper are laying on the floor. Turning yourself around you discover a big furniture piece and a desk with some drawersand more paper pieces scattered around.

No more days remain on the place where the stack of days used to be. The remains of an image of a yellow wheat field half eaten by insects is followed by blurry numbers that could read 1938 as well as 1983.

Carefully avoiding spiderwebs and other dirty obstacles you remove the box from the drawer, placing it on top of the desk.
You lift the lid, that gives up easily releasing old air and bitter smell, you can't help wondering how long has been since anyone was in the room or opened the box.
Inside the box are some black tight rolls of 35mm black and white negatives. You try to open some of them but you are afraid that they will break out of dryness (is ironic that the negatives are so dry inside this room that seems like it has been flooded many times during the rain season).
Under the negatives appears a small envelope.

What you see belongs to you forever.



You are not an expert, but your intuition tells you that they must be very old. One of them is particularly strange, there is a garden, similar to the garden outside the window, but somehow different. There are some garden furniture pieces, two deck chairs, one short garden table with a pile of dishes, some empty soda bottles and some empty glasses. 
These are memories that few have cared to claim. In fact, nobody did, they were laying on the ground, getting wet with the rain, smelled by dogs, ready to fly away in the next window blow. 
As you examine the picture you notice that is very near your face, as if you were trying to discover something else.  Something catches your attention from the corner of your eye, through the window. When you turn your face to see, there is nothing, actually the outside is barely visible through the layer of dust collected. Still, your heart beats and you swear to have seen something there. 

There is no more lint or dust in the air, the sun beams are not so present any more. Maybe it's time to go out of the hut.

You collect the pictures that fell and you bend to pick the one in the floor. It is the picture with the empty chairs, the empty glasses and soda bottles. You notice that one of the pieces of paper is a calendar day, you read "11th August, St. Claire of Assisi, Saint Philomena, St. Chromatius and St Tiburtius". It must belong to the same calendar in the bookshelf.

The garden smells like humid grass, you are under a tree, now the sun is filtered by the leaves and branches of the tree above you. The smell is very intense, sour and vegetal.

To the West there is a small hut, just like cubicle with a door and a window, you can't see inside it from where you are standing.

The sun is shining brightly, your eyes are glared, you can't see. You blink many times. You manage to see a garden, bright green grass, some sparse plants and a barrier of trees in the background. The sun is so bright. You blink a couple of times more, between blinks you start noticing the contours of what look like people. They interweave in your blink, either the garden or the people. You try to focus, to concentrate.
You are standing with the door at your back. At your feet there is a door mat made of wire to clean the mud from your shoes.
The garden opens as a whole new world before your eyes.

To the North there is an open garden, delimited far away by trees, it glows with a strange radiancy. Seems like there are some people in that direction.
To the West extends a narrow path of concrete slabs, which ends next to a hut outlined from the vegetal background.

The wind is blowing dry and hot. The grass looks dried out, the summer is dense, almost solid. A great kiskadee sings at full volume piercing your ears.
The sun is shining brightly, your eyes are glared, you can't see. You blink many times. You manage to see a garden, bright green grass, some sparse plants and a barrier of trees in the background. The sun is so bright. You blink a couple of times more, between blinks you start noticing the contours of what look like people. They interweave in your blink, either the garden or the people. You try to focus, to concentrate in what you see between blinks.


When you open your eyes this time, you concentrate in not blinking anymore. You can witness the scene.
Around you there are some human beings, something is not quite right, you have the feeling that the colours are missing, but you are not completely sure, you have nothing to compare with.
There is a small garden table, with the remains of snacks and drinks. There are some empty glass soda bottles and empty glasses, a couple of plates are piled up and two dried cookies remain in the edge of the plate on the top.
You count four girls, nine boys, two woman and one man.
The kids are running around playing some kind of catch and run game, their yelling is not audible, the kiskadee stopped singing.
The adults are having a soundless animated and fun conversation, or at least that is what it seems like. Trying to read their lips has proven to be not successful, but when you reach the woman to the left with your eyes, your gazes meet, she makes a brief pause, her lips are still but slightly parted, as if she is about to say something. She is sat in a tumbler, her legs crossed, wearing a white dotted sleeveless dress.
It seems like summer, but you feel rather cold.
You have the feeling that they are not noticing you, the woman is chatting again with the others, ignoring you. The sun is still too bright, you are fighting against yourself not to blink.

A huge extended plain garden covered with grass, it is limited by old trees, bushes and some ornamental plants arranged in groups. It all seems to be taken care of. From this spot you can see the front of the whole house. To one of its sides, you see a path to a hut. In the other side, a pile of wood neatly arranged and far away some fruit trees.

To the South is the shelter.

In front of the main entrance, in the only wall without doors, is a thin walnut console with a key hanger, a Carrara marble countertop and a framed mirror.
Behind the entrance door rests a pile of folded garden chairs, obstructing one of the panes of the double door, which opens to the inside.
From the ceiling hangs a light pink alabaster lamp, it is daylight, so there is no need for it to be on.


To the North is a closed double door to the garden or the main entrance door to the house.
To the West is a closed wooden panel door with eight glass lites.
To the East is a closed wooden panel door with eight glass lites and a translucent (once white, now grey) organza curtain.You are looking for a bed.

Your deprivation of sleep points to the closer door that should be a couple of doors away of where you are standing.

A whisper advises you to close the door after you, or the wind currents will enter the house, "all doors in the foyer must be always closed".

The room looks like a private studio, not to receive people, but to perform personal writing and reflexions. It has a window facing North from where the garden can be seen. The furniture in here is reduced to a big mahogany secretaire desk with a matching chair with its seat upholstered in black leather with brass tacks.

To the West is the foyer.
To the South is the bedroom

In the bedroom part of the room there is a window facing East, from where you can see the garden.
There is a narrow corner closet hidden behind an arcade dividing the bedroom from the office.
The room is dominated by a double bed framed by two fancy small night tables, with no lamps on them.
